A strong earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale shook Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region on Tuesday. The earthquake occurred approximately 186 kilometers (116 miles) below the surface, according to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), which reported the incident.
The Hindu Kush area is well known for seismic activity because it lies near the junction of shifting tectonic plates. While this earthquake was not extremely shallow, its magnitude was strong enough to create noticeable shaking in parts of Afghanistan and surrounding regions.
Residents in nearby towns and villages felt vibrations, though there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Deep earthquakes like this one are less likely to cause heavy destruction on the surface compared to shallow ones, but they can still be widely felt across borders.
Location and impact of the earthquake
The earthquake’s epicenter was located in the mountainous Hindu Kush range. This region stretches across northeastern Afghanistan and is part of one of the most seismically active zones in Asia. Because of the depth of 186 km, the energy traveled underground before reaching the surface. This type of deep quake often spreads tremors across a much larger area.

People living in northern Afghanistan, as well as some neighboring countries, reported mild shaking. In many homes, windows rattled, and light objects moved, but there were no confirmed major damages to buildings or infrastructure at the time of reporting.
The Hindu Kush zone has experienced several earthquakes over the years, many of which were stronger. However, even a moderate tremor like this can cause fear among people, especially those who live in areas where homes are not built to withstand quakes.
Emergency services and local authorities monitored the situation closely after the tremor. Initial checks did not show signs of collapsed structures or widespread panic. Still, residents remained alert, as the memory of past earthquakes in the region often leads to heightened caution.
History of quakes in the Hindu Kush region
The Hindu Kush mountains are known as one of the most earthquake-prone areas in the world. This is because the Indian tectonic plate is pushing into the Eurasian plate, creating pressure deep underground. Over time, this pressure is released in the form of earthquakes.
Although Tuesday’s earthquake was moderate in scale, the region has seen stronger ones in the past. Quakes here can range from small tremors that pass unnoticed to powerful jolts that cause heavy destruction and loss of life. The depth of an earthquake plays a major role in how much damage it causes. Shallow quakes, occurring closer to the earth’s surface, usually create more harm compared to deeper ones.

The Hindu Kush lies in a zone where both shallow and deep earthquakes occur. Many deep earthquakes like this one, at over 100 km underground, are often felt across vast distances. That is why people living in different provinces and even in neighboring countries sometimes report feeling the shaking.
For communities in Afghanistan, earthquakes remain one of the natural events they live with. Because of the geography and geology of the region, the Hindu Kush will likely continue to experience seismic activity from time to time. This particular earthquake, though notable, was not among the most dangerous.
